Barahúnda

Helena de Alfonso (voice, lyrics) and Jose Lara Gruñeiro (guitar, lyrics) are the musicians that lead Barahúnda.

Barahúnda was established in Madrid in 1998, Helena and Jose’s native city, with the idea of making folk music with Iberian roots, setting to music Galician-Portuguese cantigas, Mozarabic jarchas, Sephardic songs and writing our own lyrics, all of them shaped in an elegant, simple, original and recognised style.

We release our first album in 2002, “Al sol de la hierba” (Sonifolk, 2002), launched at Sala Galileo Galilei (Madrid). Our second album, “Una hora en la ventana” (Musikarte, 2007), was released in 2006 and launched at San Juan Evangelista, the legendary “Johny” of Madrid.

About that time, our songs were included in compilation albums such as “Bágoas negras”, together with Eliseo Parra, Berrogüeto, Amancio Prada... We move to Galicia in 2010 and, little by little, the songs that constitute “Múdanse os ventos” were being curated; this is our third studio album, launched at Auditorio de Rianxo, Casa das Crechas (Santiago de Compostela) and Sala Galileo (Madrid).

“Múdanse os ventos” is an album eminently Atlantic, Galician, Portuguese, marine... It is the transcription of a magic and wild word, which is their way of making music, however, it still is a journey through space-time. Artists José Luis do Pico Orjais, Jose Climent, Xurxo Varela, Jose Luis Sanz García-Ochoa, Txema Mawenya, Aida Saco Beiroa and Daniel Romo collaborated in this work.
