Wintering Grounds is a studio-oriented project created by multi-instrumentalist Marcos Sánchez, based in Ferrol (Galicia, NW of Spain). The music blends elements of extreme and progressive metal, featuring an eclectic array of resources where heavy riffs and dense keyboard parts, growls and clean vocals or long instrumental developments and minimalist choral interludes coexist, all of this nuanced by the inclusion of uncommon instruments in the genre, like vibraphone or marimba. This diversity reflects, in some way, the broad spectrum of influences the musician has been exposed to, from the academic training in classical percussion (Conservatory of Seville) or History of Music (University of La Rioja), to the various projects in which he has been involved as a drummer, covering very different styles: blues (Víctor Aneiros Band, Julie Guravich Band, Martins/Aneiros Band), country (Los Eternos), singer-songwriter music (Silvia Penide, Andrés Suárez), punk rock (Chris Masuak, ex-Radio Birdman), garage/soul (The Hellbuckers, Madame Bird, Grey City Funk) or progressive rock (Labyrinthus, Trece, Licopodio, Mantis Damorte), among others. To date, the project has released two albums: Wintering Grounds (full album, 2024) and Impasse (EP, 2026). Two more were released under the name Fern the Fact, a prequel to the current project: Fern the Fact, (full album, 2018) and Formalist Idiot Metal (full album, 2021).
