Alejandro Vargas was born in Holguín (Cuba) on 4th February, 1980. He started to study music at 6 learning first-hand from J. Rodríguez Milord, Ulises Hernández or Harold Gramatges, graduating as a piano soloist from the Instituto Superior de La Habana. He later completed his musical education in several seminars by Herbie Hancock, Chucho Valdés, Danilo Pérez or Jorge Luis Prats.He has played with famous bands like Irakere or Pupy y Los Que Son, Son and collaborated with world-renowned artist such as saxophonist Donald Harrison, trombonist Steve Turre and singers Lucrecia, Guadi Galego, Ugía Pedreira and Diana Fuentes, besides participating in a project alongside José Luis Gutiérrez and performing in music festivals in Brazil, Norway, Trinidad and Tobago or Switzerland.Since settling in Galicia in 2009, Vargas has developed outstanding projects such as the duo with the drummer L.A.R. Legido “Descarga ao Vivo” or “Miniaturas de Eugenio Granell. Música Revelada” (aCentral Folque, 2012). His latest work, “Ama AZa LaNdo” (2014), is a blend of soundscapes where he recreates atmospheres belonging to minimalism, orientalism, free improvisation and jazz; a thought about the piano technique within the amplification of potential records towards a free committed fantasy.Between his awards stand out the special prize Cubadisco 2013 with “Miniaturas de Eugenio Granell. Música Revelada”, best jazz album Cubadisco 2008 with “Trapiche” (Producciones Colibrí, 2007) and the first prize at the young jazz Cuban artist awards JoJazz 2001.
